Two men fighting for their countries in WWII find themselves marooned on Pacific Island, an American (Lee Marvin) and Japanese (Toshiro Mifune). Despite staring out as enemies keen to inflict pain and suffering on each other and finding it difficult to communicate because of the language barrier the pair decide cooperation is the key to survival.
